Oftentimes, sewing is thought of as a hobby or something that mothers or grandmothers do for their children. For some reason or another, sewing as a trade is at grave risk of being extinct because most of the seamstresses who advertise their skills are retiring. That left me in a pickle as a sixteen-year-old wanting to learn how to sew and eventually open my own sewing shop.
So, how did I learn how to sew? A lot from my lovely Grandmother (who insisted I do beginner projects, of which I was very stubborn about), a little from myself, and a whole lot from experience. My Grandma has been sewing and crafting clothing since she was a little girl. She made clothing, toys, and blankets for her children and grandchildren with much love and care. She taught me to be careful and treat my project with attention and detail, one of the most valuable lessons I have learned. I sewed with Grandma often, times which I will always cherish. The woman who cemented my calling to sewing was Heather Baldridge, an extraordinary seamstress who owns bridal alterations shop Custom Sewing by Heather in Woodbury, MN. She said that somebody has to do this, so it might as well be me. When there's a will, there's a way and she can't wait to be the person who says 'I knew her when..." Heather gifted me seven different machines worth thousands put together which definitely made me decide I need to go head-over-heels for this.
So why the Stitchery Cottage. I was debating whether to go with that name because it sounds too quaint for what I eventually want to turn this into... which I am not going to disclose until it begins to come to fruition. But then I thought, well it's a cute name and goes along with some of my core values if you overthink it. What am I talking about? I firmly believe that people need to go back to their roots and to the countryside. To their roots meaning where they came from. To rediscover our American tradition, rooted in God and independence. To the countryside, because as Thomas Jefferson said, "great cities [are] pestilential to the morals, the health, and the liberties of man." So there. In my small corner of all this lies the realm of clothing, which is not very small after all because it would be abomindable to go without it. Instead of cycling through endless articles of uncreative garments, making the conscious effort to purchase garments made from good fibers and styles that are practical and stable. Then get them altered to your size. Because standard sizes, as everyone knows by now, are bogus. You are unique, and you want to look as hot as possible in what you're wearing because then you can feel great about yourself. And if you feel great about yourself, you will be more independent because you will be more confident because you have made a return back to your roots in that small way. And therefore, my business is called the Stitchery Cottage.
Since this is a 'yours truly' page, I will now tell you more about myself. At the time I am typing this out, I am nineteen years old and it is the year 2025. I have worked at a variety of fast food joints, retail, a cleaning company, a dog care facility, and have owned my own cleaning business. I, of course, love sewing, but my other passions are piano, gardening, writing, and hiking. I love spending time with my friends and family. I love glorifying God in my work and learning more about Him through Scripture. I have four siblings, a dog, an indeterminiate number of cats, four cows, one turkey, two geese, meat chickens, laying chickens, pigs, bees intermitantly, and a rabbit. I live in the country (obviously) with my family out in River Falls, Wisconsin.
Well, if you got to the end of this, congratulations! I will bid you adieu for now. I hope to be able to meet you soon and help you fix up your wardrobe to get you looking snatched.
